Food / Eating

Food can be a challenging issue for people with autism due to sensory sensitivities and difficulties with communication and social interaction. Many individuals with autism have a limited choice of foods they are willing to eat, often preferring bland or crunchy textures. They may also have difficulty expressing their food preferences or tolerating changes in their routine, which can make mealtime stressful for both the individual and their caregivers.

Food aversions (due to texture or smell) can sometimes cause intense reactions like gagging or vomiting. A lot of Autistic report that they do not like their food touching so plates that have some sections or silicone separators can be used to keep food from touching on the same plate can help someone feel calmer while they enjoy their meal.
